Initial development of the Mansfield Wetlands began in 1998. The site is currently maintained by Friends of the Mansfield Mullum Wetlands Incorporated.

The group aims to develop and maintain an aesthetically pleasing and effective educational wetlands ecosystem through community involvement.

Among other things the Mansfield Wetlands provide a habitat for native fauna, recreation for the community and improvements to water quality in local catchments.
